Green operations with Geometric altitude, Advanced separation and Route charging Solutions
Since the early days of aviation, barometric pressure measurements have been a simple and robust method for altimetry.
However, it has some drawbacks including having no direct reference to terrain and vertical profile variabilities affecting capacity and flight efficiency.
The project will investigate the environmental potential of geometric altimetry enabled by satellite navigation, to increase safety in the TMA and support greener climb aas well as descent and approach operations. We also look at ways of optimising en-route airspace capacity by safely reducing vertical separation minima.
At the same time, the project will investigate the potential of environmentally-driven route charging to incentivise airspace users to avoid volumes of airspace with a high climate impact and disincentivise flight planning through high demand sectors / flight altitudes.
